To, uh, kickstart things into a higher gear, we have turned to Kickstarter. It’s a phenomenal idea, but only time will tell if Kickstarter works for us.
How does Kickstarter work? As their site explains, “Kickstarter is powered by a unique all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands.”
Your supporters — in our case, DL Cast‘s existing viewers and my readers — pledge a certain amount of money. If the funding goal is reached in time, everyone’s cards get charged for the pledged amounts. If the goal is NOT met, no one gets charged.
This protects your cyber patrons, as they know they won’t be throwing money into a project that isn’t going anywhere.
Our funding goal is $10,000 by March 30th, as this would allow us to continue operations, and finance several investigative trips, including one to the Gulf to report on the environmental and economic after-effects of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. (The mainstream media is now bored with that story, but those living there still have to deal with dead wildlife and other problems — we want that out there in the public eye).
Check out the show’s Kickstarter page, and consider contributing, right here.
I honestly think we’ll hit $10,000 within the next two weeks; the show has already attracted more than 201,000 views on YouTube, and our articles have received far more traffic. Clearly, there is an audience that is deeply committed to independent journalism — the question is, will they open their wallets and keep us going?
