The Associated Press reports the CIA thwarted a bomb plot on board a U.S. bound jet on the anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death. The attack was to be carried out by al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen, using a new design meant to evade detection.
The upgraded device was an stepped up version of the underwear bomb that failed to go off on the Christmas 2009 attack.
Still confined to the operatives underwear, the new bomb reportedly contains a “more refined detonation system.”
The would-be suicide bomber was told to buy a ticket on the airliner of his choosing and decide the timing of the attack. It’s not immediately clear what happened to the would-be bomber.
The U.S. officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive case.
