The long-awaited Melbourne Airport Rail Link project has finally been approved by the Victorian and Federal Government.

The project, which has been touted several times over the past decades, will connect Melbourne Tullamarine Airport to the Melbourne CBD. The ambitious project will cost an estimated $8-$13 billion.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that he and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews signed off on the project in order to ease congestion across the city and make travel to the airport more efficient. Currently, limited public transportation options connect to the international airport located 23 kilometres (14 miles) north-west of the Melbourne CBD.

Morrison said the federal government has pledged $5 billion towards the project.

Construction on the project is due to commence in 2022, with plans to integrate into the existing rail network as well as the new Metro Tunnel, which is currently under construction.
