Australian food and travel magazine Gourmet Traveller announced its annual hotel awards today and the winner is a tiny inner-city Sydney hotel with just 29 rooms.
The Hotel of the Year is the Paramount House, a WWII-era warehouse in Surry Hills, that was once the Australian HQ for Paramount Pictures.
With Sydney in the middle of a hotel-building boom, Paramount House stood out with the judges as “a four-year renovation of the 1940s landmark has created a 29-room inn of poise and style, but also fun and games”, with Japanese-style wooden tubs and “cut-above minibars” with charcuterie and cheeses. Rooms start from $240 per night.
“Paramount House Hotel’s unique appeal lies in the strength of the building’s creative community and the immediate neighbourhood,” the reviewers said.
The hotel shares with a café, co-working office, cinema and bar. A new restaurant Poly, by Ester’s Mat Lindsay, is also planned for the site.
Another new hotel, Hobart’s MACq 01, is Gourmet Traveller’s Large Hotel of the Year, and also scored the Best Minibar for its “maxibar” of Tasmanian products.
Boutique Hotel of the Year went to the Mornington Peninsula vineyard destination Jackalope, which was also recognised as having the country’s best club sandwich, combining drunken chicken with pickled green tomatoes and bacon jam.
Regional Hotel of the Year went to Alla Wolf-Tasker’s legendary Lake House in Daylesford. The 33 room retreat is celebrating 35 years in business in 2018.
The awards cover 11 categories, from a new award “best bed” which went to Adelaide’s Mayfair Hotel, to best pool, at Byron Bay’s Elements of Byron, which is surrounded by cabanas and a bar.
The 2018 Gourmet Traveller Australian Hotel Guide is published today in the June issue of the magazine and features the best 50 hotels in the country, as well as lodges and resorts.
Gourmet Traveller editor Sarah Oakes said that among the trends emerging this year “We’re seeing more hotels championing local makers and produce, and thinking hard about how to connect guests with the neighbourhood”.
