The electric Audi A3 e-tron hatchback will be making its (temporary) Stateside debut in a pilot program. Audi announced Monday at TED2012 in Long Beach, CA. that the trial run will take place in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, and Washington, D.C.During the test period, Audi will keep track of the cars’ performance in each of the different geographical environments. “The A3 e-tron pilot program serves as an important innovation platform for Audi to develop greater insight into electric vehicles and how American driving conditions affect use of the progressive technology in everyday life,” said Jeff Curry, e-mobility and sustainability strategy lead at Audi of America.
Launching the A3 e-tron program is the first step in Audi’s initiative toward expanding the U.S. electric vehicle market. Gadget Review said, “Audi intends to spark a progressive dialogue about the role transportation will play in the global megacities of the future.”
The A3 is the hatchback iteration of Audi’s electric sports car concepts. Digital Trends said of the new model, “An electric motor producing 114 hp and lb-ft of torque sits where the petrol engine used to, and a 26 kWh lithium-ion battery.”
The A3 hatchback’s price and lease-options are yet to be disclosed.
