The Melbourne Cup is ingrained in the Australian culture.

Punters across the country celebrate the day either at Flemington or over a long lunch.

Wherever the event, the celebrations have one thing in common — (over)indulgence.

The term “SirJohnKerred” was coined for people found tired and emotional at the race after the former Governor-General’s 1977 presentation of the Cup in a somewhat merry state to Bart Cummings.

In typical Cup fashion, revellers at Flemington this year enjoyed the day until it began to take its toll on them too.
