If you don’t have anything nice to say, conventional wisdom goes, say it in a campaign ad.
Ads have always been an opportunity for candidates to project grand visions and foreboding prophecies, but this year’s crop has gone over the top. The production values are better, and the tone is sometimes so dire it’s ridiculous.
Blame it on the influence of Hollywood on the tastes of American voters, or the dark mood of a country in recession.
