Half the 20 suburbs with the worst cases of mortgage stress are in Victoria, according to analysis of census data.
Research by the Grattan Institute looked at areas where mortgage repayments were greater than 30% of household income.
The analysis uses data from the 2016 census compared with the 2011 figures.
Here they are:
At the top of the list is Wollert, with a population of about 9000, north of Melbourne, with almost one out of every four with a mortgage under stress.
The areas of high stress are a little further out from city centres because that’s where new housing estates are built.
The research, which hasn’t been published yet, shows housing stress has generally reduced.
This is mainly due to record low interest rates.
