As the U.S. economy is somewhere between recession and unbearably slow growth, many Americans have felt despondent, unable to find work or pay for food.

But we can think of 120 countries that are doing way worse than the U.S.

Economist Arthur Orkum created the rather crude “misery index” by taking the sum of the unemployment and inflation rates.

After totaling the figures for almost 200 countries and territories, we came up with a list of the most miserable countries in the world.

Note: Results are based on CIA World Factbook data, which estimates figures for countries and territories that do not have reliable reporting agencies.
