T.G.I. Friday’s is throwing a massive end-of-the-world block party to ring in the purported Mayan Apocalypse which happens to fall on a Friday.The idea that the world will end on Dec. 21 is a cultural phenomenon which scientists regard as the end of the Mayan’s 5,215 year calender.
For T.G.I. Friday’s, it’s an opportunity to get paying customers to “party like there’s no tomorrow.”
“We don’t know what is going to happen, so we might as well live it up and embrace that Friday feeling, even if it is just one last time,” Nick Shepherd, chief executive of T.G.I. Friday’s parent Carlson Restaurants, said in a statement to Nation’s Restaurant News.
The restaurant chain is sponsoring Mayan-inspired “Last Friday” festivities in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Washington, D.C.
DJs will provide entertainment and bartenders will create Mayan Margaritas.
The company has created a microwebsite, thelastfriday.com, complete with a countdown clock and “End of the World Survival Kits,” which include shot glasses and drink shakers.
T.G.I. Friday’s is just one of many restaurants promoting Apocalypse specials.
Poste Moderne Brasserie in Washington, D.C., is offering a $180, multi-course “Final Feast,” while The Villa Restaurant in Wayland, Mass., is handing out sunglasses to its first 500 customers in response to a Robert Frost poem that predicts that the world will end in fire.
