Now You Can Buy A Prison In Texas For $5 Million

Here’s an offer that’s hard to refuse: the town of Littlefield, Texas is auctioning off its medium-security detention facility and selling the highest bidder above the $5 million opening bid, according to Pat’s Papers.

The five-building complex sleeps 383 inmates and comes with a gym, maintenence shed, armory, and parking lot, per the listing.

It’s also got a perimeter of double fences with an electronic shaker detection system and eight video surveillance cameras.

The jail, called the Bill Clayton Detention centre, has sat empty for more than two years. It was conceived in 1999 to help revitalize Littlefield’s economy, but instead has become a huge drain on the town, which is now over $9 million in debt, according to the Lubbock-Avalanche Journal.
