Telstra says a lightning strike and subsequent fire appears to have damaged an optic fibre in country New South Wales, causing problems with emergency 000 calls around the country.
The telco has posted a picture on Twitter of the charred pit, where crews are now working to restore service, saying it showed “significant fire damage consistent with lightning strike”.
The cable, between Orange and Bowral, was cut shortly before 3am today.

The problem has caused delays in some triple-0 calls getting through, but by late Friday morning, it’s believed services had been fully restored, although there were other reports of traffic lights and payment terminal problems.
