This morning, residents of Tel Aviv began to notice an unusual smell in the city. The Times of Israel says the smell strongly resembled chlorine, but that the authorities have been unable to work out exactly what it is, despite a number of tests.
“There’s no point in spreading hysteria,” Minister Gilad Erdan reportedly told Israel Radio. “There’s no danger.”
There’s been a few theories spread throughout the day. The IDF originally traced the smell back to a gas drilling site, Ynet reports, while later a “ground disinfection operation” in a nearby village was blamed, according to Haaretz.
The most curious theory came from reports that the IDF were holding a secret military drill. A resident reportedly called the IDF who confirmed this, Ynet reports, but the organisation later denied this. A call to the police suggested that the Navy was behind a drill that produced the smell.
If true, many are beginning to wonder if the drill could be linked to a forthcoming strike on Iran.
