Tablets are now the second most important device for driving traffic to ecommerce web sites. According to Monetate, tablets are now responsible for 7 per cent of ecommerce traffic to smartphones’ 5 per cent share. The iPad, by the way, accounts for 90 per cent of tablet traffic.

However, both smartphones and tablets are still dwarfed by PC traffic.

While the PC’s central role in ecommerce isn’t under mortal threat at the moment, tablets are the logical usurper to the throne. They have large screens, are conducive to browsing, and can incorporate multimedia features better than smartphones. Given that the Kindle Fire is basically designed to drive ecommerce, tablets’ role in the ecommerce ecosystem will continue to rise.
