The one thing you need to know if you drive to work with friends from Sydney's Northern Beaches

The NSW government’s roll out of B-line bus services on Sydney’s Northern Beaches led to a key change this week for motorists who drive to work.

And if you’re used to rounding up a couple of mates to use the T3 lane for a faster run to the city, then you need to pay attention if you want to avoid a $320 fine because the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has killed off the T3 lane to the city, pushing motorists who carshare back into the other two general lanes city-bound between 6am and 10am.

“Replacing” is the term RMS uses for ending the T3 lane from Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation (between Condamine Street and Sydney Road) to Neutral Bay.

“Changing the T3 lane to a bus lane will complement the infrastructure being built to prioritise bus services as part of the B-Line program,” the RMS said its newsletter about the changes.

“The AM bus lanes will help reduce AM peak bus journey times and improve on-time running and reliability of buses along
this important corridor.”

Taxis, hire cars (but not rental cars), motorcycles and bicycles will still be able to use the bus lane and if you need to turn left into or out of a side street, then you can use the bus lane for up to 100 metres either side of the bus lane.

But if you’re caught using the old T3 lane now that it’s a bus lane, which changed on Monday, you face a $319 fine and the loss of one demerit point.

The new bus lane operates between 6am to 10am weekdays. And the current city-bound clearway time has been extended by two hours to 5am to 11am, Monday to Friday.

The changes come as the government prepares to build a 14-kilometre tollway dubbed the Beaches Link tunnel, connecting Sydney’s inner west to the northern beaches at a cost of up to $14 billion.
