Police have taken a man into custody shortly after 10am today after he scaled the Sydney Harbour Bridge before dawn causing traffic chaos and long delays on the morning commute after police closed several lanes to deal with the situation.
The man kept moving around the bridge — a vital traffic artery for the city — with police closing and re-opening lanes depending on his location.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports police received reports of the climber on the bridge around 4.30am. They made contact with him around 6am.
The man’s motivations for climbing the bridge are unclear.
Southbound traffic is backed up as far as Epping while northbound traffic is backed up to the Western Distributor and beyond.
Motorists are being asked to avoid using the bridge and routes leading to it.
You can use Victoria Rd and Gladesville Bridge instead.
