When Michael Phelps decided to drop the 200-meter freestyle from his Olympic docket yesterday, it opened up a spot for the swimmer who finished third in that event at the Team USA Olympic Trials. That swimmer was Ricky Berens, who failed to qualify for any individual event and had planned on just swimming in relays in London.

It seems that no one took the time to let Berens immediately know that he would be replacing Phelps in the 200-meter freestyle, setting the stage for a few dramatic tweets.

Team USA called Berens about a half hour after the original tweet to let him know he’d be replacing Phelps.

Berens won a gold medal in Beijing in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay as part of a team with Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Peter Vanderkaay.
