A suspected shoplifter died after Walmart employees in Lithonia, Georgia reprimanded and tackled him, reports Jill Vejnoska at the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The man, who eyewitnesses said was middle-aged, allegedly walked out of the store with two DVD players he hadn’t paid for on Saturday, according to the AJC.

Two employees and one security guard hired by Walmart confronted the man, and a “physical altercation” took place, according to the police report, the AJC reports.

“When police arrived, they found the trio on top of the man. An officer who handcuffed the suspected shoplifter detected no resistance from him and ordered the employees off,” Vejnoska writes.

After police handcuffed the man, they realised he was bleeding from the nose and mouth and took him to a hospital, where he died.

Police aren’t planning on releasing the man’s name until later today.

Walmart placed the two employees on leave and fired the security guard, according to the AJC. A spokeswoman for the company released this statement:

“No amount of merchandise is worth someone’s life. Associates are trained to disengage from situations that would put themselves or others at risk.”
