Shortly after a company made a $1 million donation to a pro-Mitt Romney fundraising group, it promptly dissolved, according to an NBC News report. The lack of paper trail left behind by the short-lived company has raised suspicions that it was created only to make the $1 million donation—one of the largest of this election cycle to date—and avoid scrutiny of where the money originated.
Only six weeks after it was formed in Delaware, the company, W Spann LLC, made the donation to Restore Our Future, a political action committee officially unaffiliated with the Romney campaign, but founded by three of his former staffers.
On July 12, two weeks before Restore Our Future was scheduled to report its most recent donations, W Spann LLC dissolved itself.
Delaware records show the formation and cancellation of W Spann LLC was made by Boston lawyer Cameron Casey, an associate for Ropes & grey’s Private Client Group specializing in estate tax planning for “high-net worth individuals.”
The record provides no information as to the owners of the firm or what kind of services they provided.
In a campaign report filed by Restore Our Future, W Spann LLC was listed at 590 Madison Avenue in midtown Manhattan, though the building had no records of such a tenant.
When MSNBC asked about about the donation, Restore Our Future replied in an email response: “That’s not something that we normally ask a contributor for…Restore Our Future has fully complied with, and will continue to comply with, all FEC disclosure requirements.”
In July, Romney spoke at a New York private dinner for Restore Our Future donors, according to the centre for Public Integrity.
In its campaign filings, the super PAC revealed total contributions of $12.2 million in the first half of 2011.
Super PACs are expected play a big role in the 2012 contest, the first presidential election since the Citizens United case in which the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the ban on political contributions by corporations and unions.
