Professional surfer Dusty Payne, bolted out of the water during the middle of a surfing competition after he saw a shark, according to the AP. The first day of the Rip Curl Pro surfing contest took place at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach on Tuesday.
“It was the biggest fin I’ve ever seen in my life coming straight at me,” Payne told a camera crew after emerging from the threatening waters.
South Africa’s Jordy Smith, who was in the same heat as Payne and another surfer, finished the round apparently unaware of the danger that lurked, reports SFGate.
The shark was not seen again for the rest of the day.
Meanwhile, Payne is doing his best to put on his brave manly surfer face for Round 2 today.
“It’s survival now, instead of making the heat. I don’t want to go out there, but I guess I have to,” he said.
