A New York college is in shock after the son of a prominent family apparently killed 2 students and himself

Three students affiliated with the State University of New York (SUNY) in Geneseo were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide on Sunday, The Democrat & Chronicle reported.

Kelsey Annese, a 21-year-old senior at SUNY Geneseo, and Matthew Hutchinson, a 24-year old senior at the school, were allegedly found stabbed to death by former Geneseo student, Colin Kingston, in their apartment.

Kingston, 24, was upset because Annese had recently broken up with him after a three-year relationship, Geneseo Police Spokesman Jeffrey Szczesniak said at a press conference, according to CNN.

Kingston called his father on Sunday saying that he hurt Annese and Hutchinson, and he threatened to kill himself, according to the Chronicle. His father then called 911, but all three were dead when police arrived.

Annese was a member of the women’s basketball team, and Hutchinson played on the men’s hockey team. Kingston attended Geneseo until 2013 but never graduated.

The Geneseo community was left reeling after news broke of the deaths of the three young people. Located outside of Rochester, New York, Geneseo is a small, tight-knit village, where almost everyone either attends or works at the college, according to The Chronicle.

And Kingston was from a prominent Geneseo family. His grandfather had a role in local politics as a member of the Geneseo Central School Board and supervisor of the town of Geneseo.

“It was big. It was the Kingstons,” said David Congdon, a former high school classmate of Colin Kingston.

Classes for SUNY Geneseo students resumed on Tuesday, though the men’s and women’s basketball games have been postponed.
