Which is a real startup pitch? See if you can guess:”An Instagram for hamburgers.”
“The Birchbox of Europe.”
“Pandora for cats.”
“A Netflix for YouTube.”
“A mobile eBay.”
“AirBnB for dogs.”
I bet you can’t tell which ones are real. (Scroll below for answers.) That’s because many startups are duplicative, which is typically a fine strategy because the market has room for doubles (or triples.) Like Burger King and McDonald’s. Or Groupon and LivingSocial. Or Coke and–you get the point.
But iteration isn’t innovation, necessarily. That’s why we’re excited to announce that Startup 2012, Business Insider’s conference on entrepreneurship and business-plan competition taking place May 3 in New York, is featuring some folks who are really shaking up industries. Like Ben Milne, CEO of Dwolla, who is taking on the entire money supply with a radically new form of e-payments that threatens to disrupt the credit-card industry. Or Gina Bianchini, CEO of Mightybell, who’s attempting to re-jigger shared experiences and the human social domain.
We’re also inviting startups to apply to the business-plan competition to win $75,000 in cash and prizes. Do you work at a cool startup? Are you launching a cool startup? Apply for your chance to be grilled onstage by VCs — fun! — and then take home the glory. That is, money. Check out the full information here.
And we’ll have success strategies and insights from CEOs like Philip James, the head of the enormously popular wine-selling site Lot18. Top investors and other entrepreneurship experts will also speak. We’ll announce major speakers on a rolling basis, and you can see the roster here.
Startup is an intense, fun day focused on issues crucial to entrepreneurship like product development, pivots, hiring, and funding. You’ll be surrounded by 799 of your closest friends in the innovation scene.
The tickets are available at a discounted rate if you work for a startup.
