We previously reported that Dominique Leca was working on a secret iPhone version of his brilliant Sparrow For Mac email app, and today, we finally have some more details. After Google released its very lackluster Gmail app yesterday, Leca opened up about Sparrow for iPhone, and about righting the wrongs Google made on an app we’ve all been waiting anxiously awaiting.

“We want our user to spend less time on mail. Our goal is to provide an efficient and playful experience,” Leca told us. “But we need to see if the UI we’ve come up with makes as much sense on the iPhone as we thought when we designed it. Our focus is efficiency.”

One of the reasons we love Sparrow for Mac is that it’s the only app we believe truly provides an effective Gmail experience through a local desktop client. Plus, it is just so easy on the eyes.

As far as actual development goes, the Sparrow team is putting the “final touches” on the back end and basic interactions for users. They’re trying different “dresses” on the app too, Leca mentioned.

Heavy usage testing will begin in about a week, with tons of fine tuning and meticulous refinements to follow.

A pleasant Gmail experience on iPhone is finally within reach. Sparrow for iPhone will launch within the coming few months.

See below for a first glimpse at Sparrow For iPhone, which seems to indicate the app will include multiple accounts, profile images (like in the desktop app), and of course—the signature Sparrow user interface.
