NASA provided Business Insider with a montage of footage showing early, unmanned rocket launch attempts made by United States military in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Each of these attempts resulted in spectacular explosions caught on film.
According to NASA historian Erik Conway, the footage represents a period when scientists were testing the most powerful devices ever built. “The rockets were super-powerful,” Conway said. “But they were vulnerable to subtle problems.”
According to NASA, these launch attempts were unmanned and no one was hurt in the explosions. The sound effects included in this video were created and added by NASA.
