Someone Has Set Fire To An Australian Flag At Sydney's War Memorial

An Australian flag was lowered into the ‘flame of remembrance’ at Sydney’s War Memorial in Hyde Park this afternoon.

Police said the incident was captured on CCTV and revealed a woman as the lead suspect.

Police from Sydney City Local Area Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding a small fire at the War Memorial in Hyde Park today.

Emergency Services were called to the memorial about 12.40pm (Wednesday 1 October) following reports of a small fire inside the building.

On arrival, police found an Australian flag that had been lowered into the flame of remembrance causing a small fire which was extinguished.

The incident was captured on CCTV and a review of the footage shows a woman of Caucasian appearance, aged between 35 and 45, with light brown shoulder length hair. She was wearing a black and white dress with black long sleeves and ballet flats.

Police are currently searching the area for a woman matching this description.
