Smartphone owners now outnumber feature phone users in the U.S. According to a new study from Pew Research, 46 per cent of Americans own a smartphone, up from 35 per cent 10 months ago. Feature phone owners, on the other hand, fell to 41 per cent from 48 per cent.
Pew’s findings are significant because they survey consumers rather than making estimates based on discussions with distributors. It’s not just the U.S. though; smartphone penetration reached something of a tipping point in “developed” smartphone markets across the world. The five largest European markets, for example, saw penetration jump an average of 13 per cent last year, according to comScore.
We recently predicted that global smartphone sales would exceed 1.5 billion units a year by 2016. Click here to read our smartphone market forecast→
