Sloane Stephens is one of just three Americans* who made it to the second week of the French Oopen. She advanced to the fourth round today, where she’ll play sixth-seeded Samantha Stosur.
With Andy Roddick, Jon Isner, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams all crashing out early, Stephens is one of a trio of unranked American women remaining.
So who is Sloane Stephens?
She’s a 19-year-old from Florida who is finally breaking through after struggling since turning pro in 2009.
She made it to the 3rd round of the US Open last year.
This year’s French Open run is the deepest she’s gone in any Grand Slam tournament.
She’s currently ranked 70th in the world — the highest she’s ever been ranked — and has made a pretty decent $110,000 on tour this year.
She also tweets inspirational things all the time.
[*Correction: We originally wrote that Stephens was the last American left. That is very wrong. Christina McHale and Varvara Lepchenko are still alive. Apologies]
