A plane has crashed after trying to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off in the Siberian city of Tyumen, Ria Novosti reports. The state news agency says that all crew members died in the crash. 12 passengers also died, leaving the number of dead as high as 31 people.
The ATR-72 plane was built by a French-Italian company. The airline operator, UTair, as well as the airport itself, are now being investigated by prosecutors, and the deputy transport minister has flown to the site.
Reports in Russia Today suggest that technical faults are being considered, as well as the possibility of insufficient de-icing by airport staff.
Russia has a bad history for flight safety — last year 36 people died in an air crash near Yaroslavl, in Central Russia. That crash almost wiped out an entire hockey team travelling on the plane.
