A video first obtained by Reuters shows dozens on men watching on as two radicals shoot a woman accused of adultery in the head and back with rifle fire. Two Afghanistan officials said the killing was the result of a dispute between two Taliban members arguing over who could have her, according to Daily Mail.
That’s been confirmed by some of the highest authorities in the region
In fact, the Parwan Provincial Governor told CNN that both men had “some kind of relationship with the woman” and ordered the killing after accusing her of adultery in an attempt to guard their own reputation.
Still, some dispute the charge that the killers were Taliban-affiliated.
The Taliban has denied responsibility for the killing, claiming that it as a local offshoot of the Islamist movement.
They may have a valid point, as the Taliban is currently dealing with internal strife and splinter group competitors as some factions try to disrupt peace talks with the United States.
The victim was a 22-year-old woman named Najiba, according to a Parwan province spokesperson.
According to Afghanistan’s Human Rights Commission, 58 women were murdered in the last three months alone.
The killing reportedly took place in late June, and officials have promised to find the culprits. The Afghan government has called the actions of those in the video un-Islamic.
Still, it remains to be seen what kind of response or justice the Afghan government will be able to achieve.
With the clock ticking on the United States’ exit of the nation, this moment stands as both a crisis and opportunity for the Afghan government to take a stance on the brazen, extrajudicial killings meted out by local officials.
This could also be the chance for the Afghan government to set an example on how they plan to handle incidents like this in the future.
Here’s the video, from the Agence France Presse and Reuters. WARNING: This is very graphic.
