Shaquille O’Neal wants the New Jersey Nets to remain in Newark–where he was born and still has family–and is even offering to become the team’s GM if it will help make that happen. If only he had offered to play for them during any of the 18 years he’s been in the NBA, then maybe they wouldn’t have to move to Brooklyn to stay alive.Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov bought the team earlier this year, on the condition that he be able to move them to the new Barclays centre, on Atlantic Avenue in downtown Brooklyn. This real estate swindle has been in the works for most of O’Neal’s career and despite changing teams six times since being drafted by Orlando in 1992, he’s never given the Nets even a first thought. Now that the project has broken ground (making the move inevitable) he’s decided to step in and save the day. Superman is a little too late.
