An insane-looking new PlayStation 4 game pits a tiny hero against massive beasts

When the original “Shadow of the Colossus” launched on the PlayStation 2 back in 2005, it became a near-instant cult classic. It’s easy to understand why: It’s a game about conquering huge monsters, and nothing else.

In 2017, “Shadow of the Colossus” is back — a “rebuilt” version of the original game, with gorgeous new graphics.

Shadow of the Colossus (PlayStation 4)SonySame huge monsters, but with fancy new graphics — this is the new ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ for PlayStation 4.

The unique, gorgeous game is expected to launch in 2018 on the PlayStation 4, but Sony offered an early look recently. Here’s what we know!

'Shadow of the Colossus' is a straightforward game with a surprisingly nuanced story.

Sony

You're a man with a sword and a horse.

Sony

And you're in a massive open world, empty of other people but rife with the ruins of a civilisation.

Sony

Oh, and there are massive hulking beasts seemingly made out of the ruins of the previous civilisation. These are the 'colossi' -- the only enemies in the game.

Sony

Since you're a puny little human with a puny little sword, your task is to 'solve' each colossi. You'll do this by climbing, often precariously, on your foes.

Sony

Until you reach one of the several glowing spots, which you'll then plunge your sword into.

Sony

Like so:

That's the premise of 'Shadow of the Colossus' on its surface, anyway. There's more depth to the story underneath than you might imagine.

Sony

For instance: Who is this mysterious main character you play as? And why is he murdering these massive beasts?

Sony

And what in the world are these beasts, anyway? Why are they wearing armour that looks like remnants of buildings? Why are their weapons similarly bizarre?
