- The “Today” host Matt Lauer has been fired by NBC over an accusation of “inappropriate sexual behaviour.”
- His “Today” cohost Savannah Guthrie made the announcement Wednesday morning, just moments after she learned of the news.
Savannah Guthrie started off Wednesday morning’s “Today” show with the unexpected news that Matt Lauer, her NBC colleague for a decade, had been fired over an accusation of “inappropriate sexual behaviour.”
A visibly shaken Guthrie read through a statement from NBC’s chairman, Andy Lack, saying the company had “received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behaviour in the workplace by Matt Lauer.”
“This is a sad morning for ‘Today’ and NBC News,” Guthrie said. “We just learned this moments ago, just this morning. As I’m sure you can imagine, we are devastated, and we are still processing all of this.”
She said she didn’t know more than the statement she read from Lack.
“For the moment, all we can say is that we are heartbroken,” she said. “I’m heartbroken for Matt – he is my dear, dear friend and my partner. And he is beloved by many, many people here, and I’m heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story.”
She continued: “We are grappling with a dilemma that so many people have faced these past few weeks: How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly? And I don’t know the answer to that.”
