It looks like Angela Merkel’s campaign to get Nicolas Sarkozy re-elected has officially begun.”I support Nicolas Sarkozy across the line as we belong to friendly (political) parties,” Merkel said in an summit in Paris on Monday, the Telegraph reports.
It was only “natural” to support fellow Conservative Sarkozy, she said before a joint interview due to be televised.
While the pair have had their differences, both appear to be dedicated to saving the euro.
Given that Sarkozy’s two main rivals in this year’s presidential election (Francois Hollande and Marine Le Pen) have criticised both the euro and Sarkozy’s relationship with Merkel, it is fairly “natural” that she isn’t too keen to see them in office.
