It’s not clear whether Nissan is laughing at or with Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte in its new web ads for the Sentra, from ad agency TBWA/Chiat/Day in Los Angeles. But Lochte does appear to be dimly aware that he’s not being taken seriously. (He has a reputation for not being the sharpest tool in the shed.)
In the spot, Lochte sits in a luxury apartment, wearing only a burgundy silk robe from Hugh Hefner’s closet and a pair of board shorts. In a speech untainted by acting lessons, he intones lifelessly, “You may not have won gold, but you can be gold in the all-new Nissan Sentra.”
Then a much more animated Mexican man in a green silk robe pops up from behind the sofa to say “amigo speaks the truth!” (We know he’s Mexican because his appearance is punctuated by mariachi music.)
It’s all very, very ironic. Most ironically of all, that seems to be Lochte’s only appearance in the campaign. The rest of the ads — about half a dozen comedy bits around the theme “date better with Sentra” all star Lochte’s Hispanic buddy. See for yourself:
