Two Russian families have been awarded compensation nearing $100,000 each after winning a court case against a local hospital that mixed up their daughters at birth. The Telegraph reports that the case was in doubt given that the incident occurred more than 12 years ago. However, the two families were successful in their legal battle, though they initially asked for more money.
The BBC reported earlier this month that the two children were muddled at birth. The revelation came to light after one of the fathers noted his daughter didn’t look anything like him during divorce proceedings with his wife. A DNA test proved his fears were right; she wasn’t his, or his wife’s. An investigation by the family uncovered the truth.
The families have now suggested that the money won may be used to allow them all to move in together. However, the girls had previously said that they wished to remain with their (unwittingly) adopted families.
