Russia’s Krasnodar Territory has announced today that it will be opening and installing a number of “baby boxes” in a bid to prevent unwanted newborns being dumped in the trash. The boxes will be placed near hospitals and out of sight from police and security cameras.
“Our goal is to save the child’s life,”Krasnodar health department official Tamara Perepelkina told RIA Novosti.
Life in some parts of Russia has suffered severe upheaval since the end of Soviet rule, leaving many families unable to look after babies. Officials recently said that more babies are up for adoption now than there were after the end of second World War.
