A startling tweet from News Corp. boss Rupert Murdoch this morning:Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people.
That tweet is startling for a number of reasons, but one of them is not that another non-Scientologist views Scientology as “creepy, maybe even evil.” A lot of folks have that impression.
(If you don’t know much about Scientology, here are a few things you should know… )
In fact, a lot of people who have only taken a casual interest in the marriage of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, one of Scientology’s most visible adherents, have long wondered what role Scientology has played in the relationship.
So Murdoch’s hunch (knowledge?) that a Scientology story will develop here also isn’t shocking.
But it’s certainly rare to see the head of a massive media conglomerate chime in with a statement like that at the beginning of a story.
Bold, Mr. Murdoch!
(And, as an aside, this is one of the wonderful things about Twitter. When used like this, it reminds everyone that everyone’s human. Lance Armstrong’s out strafing the people who accused him of doping. Murdoch’s saying he had a tough week. Mike Tyson’s joking about biting off Holyfield’s ear. Never before have celebrities and media stars been able to show this side of themselves to so many people–in real time–without media intermediaries in the middle.)
UPDATE: A half-hour or so after the Scientology tweet, Murdoch followed it up with this one. Scientology has apparently mobilized its defenders!
Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks. Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story.
UPDATE 2: And now Murdoch’s holding forth about Mormonism!…
