Northern Irish police officer Ronan Kerr was killed by a bomb placed under his car by an unknown terrorist organisation in county Omagh, Northern Ireland yesterday.Kerr, a Catholic, had recently joined Northern Ireland’s police force and was leaving for work when the booby-trap bomb in his car exploded.

While there has yet to be any confirmation of the source of the attack, it is widely assumed to be from republicans, such as the Real IRA.

This is only the second such killing of a Northern Irish police officer since the organisation was rebuilt in the wake of the Good Friday Agreement.

The attack has been widely condemned across the political spectrum, including by Gerry Adams of Sinn Féin.
