John McAfee appears to have been caught.UPDATE: He wasn’t caught. He faked his capture as a “misdirection” he said today.

McAfee is the wealthy creator of anti-virus software and has been on the run from the Belize government for weeks.

“We have received an unconfirmed report that John McAfee has been captured at the border of Belize and Mexico,” his official blog reported on Saturday. Since then, the blog has been silent as has his Twitter account.

Even though he’s been living like a fugitive, he’s been keeping a blog and tweeting like mad. He’s also been conducting interviews, including one he gave to CNN last week.

Police in Belize want to talk to McAfee about the murder of American Gregory Faull, who was found dead at his home last month. Faull was McAfee’s neighbour and the two had been feuding over McAfee’s dogs. A few days before his death, someone had poisoned some of those dogs.

The strange story also includes speculation that McAfee is prone to psychotic episodes thanks to experiments with a psychoactive drug called MDPV, a charge that he denies on his blog.

For their part, the police say that they only want to question McAfee and his fugitive status is unnecessary. “I think he’s living a movie in his mind,” Belize mayor Mr. Guerrero, told the New York Times.
