Along with everyone else in the media Rachel Maddow is entirely puzzled over how Herman Cain has managed to rise to the top of the polls without any political infrastructure.
Maddow worries it’s proof that the parties are no longer able to perform the only function they were good for in the first place, namely vetting candidates.
Former RNC head Michael Steele says those days are long over: “You make the filing fee, you’re on the ballot.”
After that, presumably all you need is a simplified tax plan and some outrageous viral vids that no GOP stalwart would ever even consider touching and you’re good to go.
Steele says Cain’s lack of structure may be catching up to him this week as he fumbles in his response to the sexual harassment story, but the poll numbers have yet bear that out.
