A school teacher in Bangor Maine Pennsylvania has been charged for having sex with a 17-year old male student, according to Riley Yates of Fox43.com. The teacher is aged 25.The charge is, specifically, “corrupting a minor,” which is only a misdemeanour.
Still, there have been several instances like this, where the teacher has gone to jail, most notably in the case Mary Kay Letourneau, who had sex with (and gave birth to the children of) 13-year old student Vili Fualaau.
When seeing these stories, our gut is that somehow female teacher on male student sex is less of a crime than male teacher on female student sex.
On the other hand, it’s possible that that’s a sexist stance, since there may be some implication that males at that age are better able to make their own decisions about sex than girls at that age.
So we’ll just throw it open to you. Should the gender of the teacher or student matter?
