People are tweeting #putoutyourpotatoes after Peter Dutton's leadership tilt

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull defeated Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton in a leadership spill.

Turnbull declared the leadership was vacant in a Liberal party room meeting on Tuesday morning, and Dutton put up his hand to challenge the Prime Minister. Turnbull, however, won the ballot vote 48-35.

The result forced Dutton to resign from Cabinet and he will return to the backbench, where many suspect he will try to bolster his support for another shot at the leadership title.

His defeat has prompted people to tweet photos of potatoes on their doorstep with the hashtag #putoutyourpotatoes. It’s reminiscent of the #putoutyourbats tribute to late cricketer Phillip Hughes, and the #putoutyouronions trend when Turnbull challenged Tony Abbott for the leadership.

Dutton’s nickname “Potato Head” was coined by Labor’s Tim Watt in 2016, and since been repeatedly used in political memes on Twitter.
