Stories of honour killings have increasingly been in the news and statistics show these types of killings are on the rise. A young girl in Punjab, India, wasn’t willing to become just another statistic though.
Instead, after Manpreet Kaur’s parents pulled her out of school, prevented her from seeing her much older and already married lover, and were able to convince the local government to disallow him from even entering her village, she decided to act. She contacted a former servant of her house and arranged for five contract killers to carry out a plan to execute her parents and her brother, reports the Hundustan Times.
After two failed attempts, the killers snuck over the Kaur home’s boundary wall on the night of July 15th and proceeded to kill the domestic servant, Jarnail Singh, sleeping in the home’s corridor, the Times of India reports . Singh now disposed of, the killers began making their way towards the stairs leading to the bedrooms of the intended targets, Manpreet’s father Avtar Singh, his wife, and his son, when they awoke. The killers, noticing their targets were now conscious, quickly fled the scene.
Now, they are all in jail. Manpreet faces charges of planning to murder her parents and brother and has since divulged the details surrounding this sensational case.
