Eight days ago, Mark Shields of Washington DC, launched a petition on Change.org requesting Apple to go public with its plan to protect Chinese workers.
Response to that petition has been so fast and furious that it literally knocked Change.org offline, says Amanda Kloer, Director of organising for Change.org.
About 163,000 people have signed the petition so far and every minute about another dozen join the ranks. The petition wants Apple to do a couple of things.
- It wants Apple to “release a worker protection strategy for new product releases” in which the company documents how it plans to protect workers during that high stress time.
- Although Apple announced that the Fair labour Association will be monitoring its suppliers, the petitioners want Apple to be transparent and “publish the results of FLA’s monitoring, including the NAMES of the suppliers found to have violations and WHAT those violations are.”
Shields describes himself as an Apple lover who wants to know that when he buys his beloved Apple products “it’s not at the cost of horrible human suffering,” he explains in his petition. “Your own ads say that ‘the people who think they are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.’ Please get to it.”
