House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi held a Monday press conference that was interrupted by a large group of immigrant-rights protesters, who blasted the California Democrat for dealing with President Donald Trump.
The press conference, which Pelosi scheduled with Democratic Reps. Barbara Lee and Jared Huffman of California, was intended to focus on the DREAM Act, legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship for people who were approved for DACA — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects some 800,000 young immigrants who are living in the country illegally — and other immigrants who were brought to the US as minors.
Protesters shouted down Pelosi, calling her a “liar” while also chanting “Democrats deport” and “all 11 million,” signalling that they were seeking amnesty for all of the immigrants living in the US illegally.
“Democrats created an out-of-control deportation machine and handed it over to Trump,” they said, making mention of the number of deportations under President Barack Obama. “We demand accountability. Democrats are not the resistance of Trump. We are.”
Pelosi told the protesters that they clearly “don’t want any answers,” according to a video from NBC Bay Area, which also showed her shouting back, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“We need to have a conversation, but that was completely one-sided,” Pelosi told reporters afterward, Politico reported. “They don’t want any answers.”
The protest came days after Pelosi, Trump, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer appeared to agree to the framework of a deal to both protect DACA recipients and provide additional border security. A statement from Schumer and Pelosi said the trio “agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”
