Emboldened by an enthusiastic reception from Hollywood’s gay elite, President Barack Obama made what appeared to be an off-colour joke about his wife and Ellen DeGeneres during a fundraiser last night.
Obama warmed up the crowd by thanking DeGeneres, who hosted the fundraiser and introduced the President, and joking about the First Lady’s appearance on her talk show:
“I want to thank my wonderful friend who accepts a little bit of teasing about Michelle beating her in pushups,” he said, according to a White House transcript. “But I think she claims Michelle didn’t go all the way down.”
The crowd erupted in laughter, although it is not clear whether Obama meant the remark as sexual innuendo.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Obama “kept a straight face” and “seemed briefly caught off-stride” by the audience’s interpretation.
“That’s what I heard,” he added. “I just want to set the record straight — Michelle outdoes me in pushups as well.”
But White House pool reporter Todd Gillam, of the Dallas Morning News, writes that Obama let the line “hang naughtily, provoking laughter from the crowd.” But Gillam also misquotes Obama in a way that suggests the President was making a joke about blowjobs.
Per Gillam’s pool report:
“He warmed up with some jokes about the first lady’s appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show. ‘Michelle outdoes me in pushups as well,’ he said, after saying that she’s taken some criticism on her technique ‘because she doesn’t go all the way down’ – a line that he let hang, naughtily, provoking laughter from the crowd.”
