This public relations firm is really bad at its own public relations.
The PR woman didn’t appreciate that, and responded accordingly — in a relatively civil tone — saying that they would stop contacting her. But her boss, VP and Media Director Jose Martinez, had something to say as well.
“What a fucking bitch!” he said in an email to his subordinate and Lawson.
Obviously, that was a mistake — albeit an amusing one coming from a PR company. He had accidentally hit ‘reply-all.’
They exchanged another pair of emails, and then the VP laid down the gauntlet:
“You should be flattered that you are even viewed relevant enough to be pitched at all instead of alienated PR firms and PR people – who are actually the livelihood of any journalists business,” he said in the email.
Oops. It just so happens that Lawson is extremely relevant (and even if she wasn’t, that’s just rude). She tweeted what happened out to her 167,000+ followers, and @BrandlinkComm was soon trending — in a bad way. Other mum bloggers are now raising their banners, getting the word out in defence of The Bloggess.
The firm’s clients can’t be liking that. Yes, PR people get a lot of crap, but the nature of the job requires that you just shut up, hold your head high and carry on. Railing on a blogger because they annoyed you isn’t in the cards.
Even if Martinez had done this to a tiny blog, word would have eventually gotten to someone like Lawson and the same thing would’ve happened. Anything that you say or do will get out, and with the rate of information exchange that social media allows, it only takes a few minutes to have a crisis explode.
