This email landed in my inbox earlier today and required two readings to make sure it was for real.
I’ve redacted the names and affiliations to protect the no doubt hard-working, well-meaning intern who was tasked with sending it.
But just a note to major media companies confused about the ways of social media — if you want me to follow you on Twitter there are three surefire ways to make that happen:
- Be servicey
- Be entertaining
- Follow me and RT (so I will know you are paying attention).
This email is not one of them:
Good Afternoon, Ms. MacNicol [however, points for spelling my name correctly!]
My name is [redacted] and I am a summer social media intern with [major media company] Public Relations.
We noticed that you are not following @[majormediacompanyPR] on Twitter, we would love for you to follow our account.
Additionally, you can find a Twitter list of all of [major media company] U.S. Publicists at [redacted].
If you are on Facebook, we’d love to connect with you there, too.
Let us know if you have any additional questions.
Have a great weekend.
