A Portuguese and U.S. citizen who had been on the run from the FBI for 40 years is appealing his extradition back to America, reports the BBC.George Wright was convicted of murder in 1962, but escaped from a New Jersey prison while serving his sentence in 1970. Two years later he hijacked a plane on its way to Algeria from the U.S. He was dressed as a priest and apparently produced a gun from a hollowed out bible while on board.
The Telegraph reported last week that he had finally been captured by the FBI after several years hiding from his past. However, Wright’s lawyer says that any remaining time on his sentence should be served in Portugal claiming that if Wright is extradited, “he will die.”
