We’re currently on our way to New Hampshire to camp out for the primary. Look for comprehensive coverage over the weekend through primary night right here.
THE REPUBLICAN RACE
It’s Romney’s race to lose at this point. Conservative anti-Romney voters have not been able to produce a viable candidate to challenge him (Perry), to rally around a candidate that could defeat him (Gingrich), or recognise a conservative alternative when they were given one (Huntsman).
Instead, Rick Santorum managed to avoid all scrutiny or attention and became the repository for the GOP’s bases extreme aversion to Mitt Romney. Santorum has done a Carter-like surge in the polls in the early primary states, but has very little chance of gathering the financing and organisation to compete with Romney effectively. If Romney ever feels the need to destroy Santorum, the opposition research file is overflowing: Santorum was a well-connected part of the K-Street Project, a leader of profligacy during the Bush years, an enemy of the well-funded business class of the GOP, and has had a career long penchant for making social conservative ideas seem even more radioactive. He even endorsed Arlen Spector over Pat Toomey, only to see Spector switch parties and vote for Obamacare in the Senate.
We’re sure Rick will enjoy the new attention. But everyone should remember that it was no merit in Santorum, but Mitt Romney’s flaws that made the Santorum surge possible.
THIS DAY IN POLITICS
On January 6th 1999, the 106th Congress was convened and announced that their first order of business would be the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.
Two debates, one Saturday and one Sunday morning in lieu of Meet The Press, and then the result in New Hampshire on Tuesday.
Prepare for Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, and Jon Huntsman to relentlessly attack Romney. Until now most of the Romney alternatives have been satisfied attaching each other. The result in Iowa has focused them on the actual front-runner.
